Henry H. Noyes was born in China, moved to the United States, and grew up in Canada. For fifteen years, he lived in Little Italy on Chicago's Northside. A machinist by trade, he worked at a large Westside factory with an interracial work staff, was a shop steward and member of his union's bargaining committee. Experiences both in the neighborhood and the factory were his incentives for writing Hand Over Fist.
